What is RAM and why does it exist?

RAM (Recyclability Assessment Methodology) is part of the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regime for packaging. Developed by DEFRA, in collaboration with PackFlow/PA Consulting, RAM provides a standardised method for assessing the recyclability of household packaging based on current UK collection, sorting, and reprocessing infrastructure.

Each packaging component is given a Red, Amber or Green (RAG) rating based on its performance across four end-of-life stages: classification, collection, sortation, and reprocessing.

RAM exists to support the modulation of disposal fees under EPR. Packaging rated green will incur lower fees, while red-rated packaging will attract higher costs.
